Towpath Treck for MND - Sunday
14th August 2005

An early start on
Sunday 14th August saw two friends set out to walk the Lancaster
Canal from Preston to Glasson Dock, a distance of 26 miles.
Christine Martin, Contracts
Manager of the Preston Primary Care Trust, and her walking companion
Tom Alty, the 70 year old father of Rosie Harris , MND Regional Care
Advisor( (West of England), clocked up a total of 46,500 steps on a
NHS pedometer. The NHS recommend a healthy average of 10,000steps
per day. That was not all that they 'Clocked up' for, between them
they were able to raise £450 for the Motor Neurone Disease
Association.
It was, however, purely coincidental
that Paula Radcliffe completed the same distance in winning the
European Marathon, albeit in a slightly faster time!

MND Collection - Saturday 19 March
2005
We were part of a group of people from the MND
Association collecting at the Manchester United Football Ground.
A grand total of £5270.50 was collected by 87
volunteers from 11 Branches, admirably organised and assisted by the team
from Head Office. Our share of the collection amounted to
£1151.02 which will go towards the work of the Branch. A big thank you
to all who helped and to the "Four in Hand" at Didsbury for the excellent
buffet on completion.

Carers' Lunch - Monday 23 January
2005
Caring For Carers
|
Getting a break as a
carer is very difficult. However, the Branch gave this opportunity
to past and present carers by providing lunch at the Calf’s Head’,
Worston, near Clitheroe. The event took place on Monday 23 January
2005 and facilitated the sharing of experiences and an opportunity
to discuss any problems the carers may be encountering. One
ex-carer, who came to a similar event two years ago, told us how
much it had helped her at that time, and so we thought we would try
the idea again.
Yet another way we
are trying to help those caring for loved ones affected by the
disease.

|
On Friday, 8 October we held
a Fundraising & Awareness event in the form of a Ceilidh
at the BAE Samlesbury - Canberra Club.
Live music was provided by Clann Bheatha and the Caller
tried her best to get everyone tied up in knots! Our
thanks to Christine for organising it and to all who
joined in the fun - we raised just under £300.

Presentation by Chorley Mayor -
28 September 2004

Eric Bell, the Mayor of Chorley in 2003 - 2004 was
determined to raise as much as he could in his term
of office and worked very hard to achieve his goal.
He wanted to help various local groups and MND was
one of his two main charities. On 28
September, representatives of the various
charities were invited to the Mayor's Parlour to be
presented with our cheques. The total donated to our
Branch was £5000 which was a wonderful amount and
our grateful thanks go to Councillor Eric Bell for
all his support and hard work for our cause.

Branch/HSE Walking Group Walk - Saturday
20 June 2004
|
The walk of approximately ten miles was
the culmination of MND Awareness Week and was titled 'Stickle Tarn -
not the obvious route'. We met at Elterwater in the Lake
District at 10.00am following a journey on the M6 in torrential
rain. Fortunately the weather cleared and for the entire walk
it was beautifully warm and sunny and we were able to enjoy the
spectacular scenery.

The walk began by climbing the
ridge, by the footpath, to Huntingstile Crag, and followed the ridge path for
approximately four miles, via Silver How, Lang How, Little and Great
Castle How, Blea Rigg, and so approached Stickle Tarn, where we
stopped for lunch. A couple we met on Silver How remarked on our MND
T-shirts and informed us that their friend was chairman on the Essex
Branch - one instance of raising awareness! |
|
We then followed
Stickle Ghylll to the valley bottom and returned to Elterwater by
the Cumbria Way. We were all revived by liquid refreshments at
the Britannia Inn, where, once again, the T-shirts provoked a great
deal of interest.

Branch Barbeque - Saturday 6 June 2004
 |
Our second annual barbeque was held
again at a member's home near Gisburn. About 30 members and friends
of the Branch enjoyed a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon. The
afternoon stayed dry although the sun did not put in an appearance
but at least it didn't rain! Our thanks go to Ian for hosting it
once again. To see larger images please click on them. |

Tesco Collection - Saturday 22 May 2004
|
Once again, members of the Branch
stood outside Tesco with our collecting tins. Thanks to the
generosity of the shoppers visiting the store we raised £156.50 to
help those living with MND in our area. Thanks to all the members
who gave their time and to all the shoppers at the Leyland Tesco
Extra store who donated to our cause so generously. |
